Love the Sly bio. (Ben *Greenman is the author. He also wrote "Dig If You Will The Picture," which is an amazing Prince bio.) Thanks for compiling a great playlist!
i had to! Sly's first album is so underrated, and this song is the original sample for one of the greatest hip hop songs of all time - LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out." Sly's influence is vast!
I just bought a copy of There's a Riot Goin' On, so this article came in perfect time. An old professor of mine wrote this great breakdown of "Sing a Simple Song" where you can read annotations in real time as you listen and then read more of his commentary at the end. I highly reccomend checking it out, and I look forward to listening to your playlist! https://scalar.usc.edu/nehvectors/soulsides/simplesong-1
My older cousins turned me on Sly's album Stand, which I loved. Riot was such a dark affair it took me some time to get into it, but Fresh remains my favorite. Thanks for sharing, Kadrian.
Love this post and the juxtapositions of two icons. Interestingly enough, I discovered Capricorn in a similar way and the way you described the experience was so refreshing. Thank you!
Cat solution: try a water gun! I used one on my kitty 2-3 x and after that, I just had to show it to her to get her off a counter. She stopped getting on the counter soon after.
Thx for the Sly ponderings. A trailblazer in so many ways.
